Chillingworth's estate makes Pearl rich, and she never returns to Boston. Later, however, Dimmesdale thinks himself into believing that Hester has tempted him into sin.
She refuses to reveal the name of her child's father, which angers the Puritanical citizens of Boston. She receives occasional letters from Pearl, who has married a European aristocrat and established a family of her own.
The Puritan setting also enables him to portray the human soul under extreme pressures. Transcendentalism was a religious and philosophical movement of the early nineteenth century that was dedicated to the belief that divinity manifests itself everywhere, particularly in the natural world.
Hester convinces Dimmesdale to run away with her and Pearl so that they can start over together as a family.

The story begins in seventeenth-century Boston, then a Puritan settlement. Shunned by the community, they live in a small cottage on the outskirts of Boston.
In a shameful public ceremony, Hester is forced to stand on a scaffold for more than three hours and submit to an interrogation.
The absence of any flowers other than the thorny roses also hints that ideals are often accompanied by evil and pain. The doctor sees the wound, but chooses not to treat it.
Pearl, playing nearby, does not recognize her mother without the letter. The former lovers decide to flee to Europe, where they can live with Pearl as a family. Both feel a sense of release, and Hester removes her scarlet letter and lets down her hair. When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale.
The Scarlet Letter is the final product. One night, when Pearl is about seven years old, she and her mother are returning home from a visit to a deathbed when they encounter Dimmesdale atop the town scaffold, trying to punish himself for his sins. Throughout his life, Hawthorne was both fascinated and disturbed by his kinship with John Hathorne.
She has made herself into a symbol of feminine repression and charitable ideals, and she stands as a self-appointed reminder of the evils society can commit.
Following the interrogation, Hester and Prynne meet in private, where the two apologize for their respective offenses Hester for her adultery and Prynne for his long absence, as well as for marrying such a young, vital woman—and at his age. Pearl fashions a green letter A out of grass.
He confesses this to Hester, who's unable to reveal Chillingworth's true identity due to her oath. Following her ordeal on the scaffold, Boston's officials decide to release Hester from prison.
Hester and Chillingworth, however, are the only ones who see him, and they take Dimmesdale home to rest. The Reverend delivers a moving sermon that week, following which he reveals the scarlet letter on his chest.
